Dr. Richards was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He participated in many sports while growing up, but he excelled at basketball. In high school he was named to various all-star teams including the all-provincial team in 12th grade. He was recruited by numerous colleges, including NCAA division 1. He decided to stay in his hometown and play at the University of Calgary. His college basketball career ended as a result of an athletic injury during his sophomore year. This setback is what inspired him to pursue a career in sports medicine.
In 1991, Dr. Richards received his undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1996 from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, one of the top medical schools in Canada. He completed his five-year residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Ottawa in Canada’s capital city in 2001.
Upon completion of residency, Dr. Richards received two additional years of subspecialty training (fellowships). His first fellowship was in arthroscopy and sports medicine. He spent the year in Plano, Texas with Drs. F. A. Barber, and A. I. Glogau – both nationally and internationally respected and renowned arthroscopic surgeons. His second fellowship year was spent with Dr. S. S. Burkhart in San Antonio, Texas, one of the leading shoulder arthroscopists in the world.
Dr. Richards has been involved in both clinical and biomechanical research. Many of these projects have been published in international, peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international meetings. He has also co-authored a chapter in the Textbook of Arthroscopy. Dr. Richards is on the editorial board of the Arthroscopy journal and is also on the communications committee of the Arthroscopy Association of North America. Dr. Richards regularly instructs national and international orthopedic surgeons at shoulder arthroscopy courses for the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
